How to Crochet Around a Cotton Cloth

A cotton cloth can have many uses in the home, from dish cloths to face cloths. You might also have dresser scarves or tablecloths made out of cotton fabric. When you want to add a little extra decoration to these cotton fabric pieces, crochet around a cotton cloth. The technique is simple enough for both the novice and expert crocheter to finish this project in a short time.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Cotton clothSewing machine or sergerMatching or contrasting threadCrochet thread (size 10)Crochet hook (size 8 or 9)Scissors

Instructions

1 Sew a zigzag stitch around the very edge of the cotton cloth or serge around the edges with a serger.

2 Place a slipknot of the crochet thread onto the crochet hook. Insert the hook up from the backside of the cotton cloth about 3/8 inch away from the edge and about 2 inches away from any corner. The hook is sharp enough to poke through the cotton cloth.

3 Crochet single crochet stitches around the entire crochet cloth, spacing the single crochets about 1/4 inch apart around the entire edge. Join the beginning single crochet and the ending single crochet with a slipstitch to finish the foundation row.

4 Crochet one single crochet in the first single crochet of the first row. Chain two and single crochet in the next single crochet. Repeat the same pattern around the entire cotton cloth until you come back around to the starting point. Join the final chain two space and the first single crochet with a slipstitch.

5 Chain four and make a slipstitch in the first single crochet. Make a slipstitch twice in the chain two space. Make another slipstitch in the single crochet. Chain four and make another slipstitch in the next single crochet. Repeat the same pattern around the entire cotton cloth. Join the end stitch and the first stitch of the row with a slipstitch.

6 Cut off the crochet thread to leave a 4-inch tail. Pull the loop all the way through the crochet hook and tighten the knot. Weave in the end and clip off the excess thread to finish.
