How to Cut Bamboo House Plants

According to the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, bamboo houseplants are not technically bamboo, but rather cane cuttings from the Dracaena sanderana plant, commonly sold under the name "lucky bamboo." Pruning lucky bamboo should be done when the plant begins to appear leggy and loses its neat, compact shape.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Pruning shearsParaffin waxPopsicle stick

Instructions

1 Cut stems of the bamboo plant using pruning shears. Hold the shears perpendicular to the stem, just above a leaf bract, and cut cleanly through the stem.

2 Melt paraffin wax in a microwave according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply a thin layer of paraffin wax to the cut face of the plant using the Popsicle stick.

3 Remove the bamboo from its pot during the period of dormancy, after leaves have begun to fall off, and use the pruning shears to cut back up to one third of the roots just below where they meet the stalks.

Tips and warnings

Roots of lucky bamboo may not need to be pruned if it appears that there is adequate room for additional root growth in the pot.
