How to decorate a home country cottage style

Country cottage designs work in a wide variety of architectural settings---even ultra-contemporary, sleek environments tend to soften with some country cottage touches. With a little restraint, you can incorporate the relaxed, homey, decorative aspects of country cottage style into your home without creating the cluttered mess that results when this style is done to excess. Create a plan for your own home, and follow guidelines from decorators to achieve a cosy country cottage decorating style.

Skill level:Moderate

Instructions

1 Add rose bushes or other flowering plants outside your windows. This goes a long way towards giving even an urban home or apartment a country cottage feel.

2 Select lace or lace-trimmed curtains for your front rooms to give a country cottage appearance from both the inside and the outside. Lace adds privacy while allowing in natural light, which brings out the visual appeal of textiles, wood, and decorative pieces such as hand-painted ceramics.

3 Furnish your home for comfort. Select upholstered chairs, sofas, and love seats with thick padding and plush fabrics. Multicolour patterns make good choices for households with children or pets. Choose deep, jewel tones such as garnet, emerald, or turquoise; soft colours such as rose, gold, olive, and sky blue; or a floral such as roses to carry throughout your home.

4 Choose traditional beds, such as four-poster, canopy, or sleigh beds. Handmade quilts work well in country cottage decorating schemes. Furnish bedrooms with antique nightstands, small tables, and marble-top washstands. Place hand-painted ceramics and old-fashioned lamps on tables.

5 Add decorative accent pieces throughout your home, such as baskets and pottery items in the kitchen and bathroom. Use a large basket to hold magazines, a vintage sewing basket for spare toilet paper, and vintage crockery or pottery to conceal toilet brushes. Set figurines and decorative bottles on windowsills and shelves---sparingly---to create a layered, cottage look.

6 Invest in eye-catching details for each room. For example, buy a tea set and tray to display on the coffee table; set out an antique basin and ewer for a hall table floral display; hang framed nature art, such as botanical drawings, birds, and landscapes, in each room; and feature a well-designed wooden wall clock or grandfather clock in the living room.

7 Place fresh, country-style bouquets throughout your home. Loosely arranged cut flowers add a colourful touch on your mantel or coffee table, on your dining table, in bathrooms, and on bedroom dressers.
