How to Decorate Knotty Pine Paneling

Knotty pine panelling gives any room in your house an instantly rustic and warm atmosphere. This type of panelling was very common in previous decades for numerous reasons. The material was not simply cheap and easily accessible, but it went well with popular house designs at the time such as ranch-style and colonial houses. Decorating with knotty pine is easy because the wood is such a neutral colour that it embraces nearly any colour scheme. Keep in mind however, that country-style or rustic furniture and accessories go best with knotty pine panelling; save modern furniture for rooms that do not feature this style of wood.

Skill level:Easy

Instructions

1 Select your colour scheme. Because you're using knotty pine panelling, you've already selected one colour, which is a light golden brown. Now you need to select two more colours. You can pick any two colours you like, such as red and green, blue and violet, orange and yellow. However, some think that knotty pine looks best with one cool colour, such as blue or green, and one warm colour, such as orange or red.

2 Choose one of your two colours to act as the main colour for your furniture. Use the other as the dominant colour in your window treatments. For example, you could have a mint-green sofa with red cafe curtains or a crackled yellow kitchen table and chairs with lavender Roman shades. The object is to represent the two colours that make up your colour scheme in a prominent fashion.

3 Select other accessories for your room in the colour that dominates your window treatments. Thus, your home accessories should not be in the same colour as your furniture. For example, if you have a mint-green couch and red cafe curtains, select red throw pillows for the couch and a red leather ottoman-style coffee table. Or if you have a yellow bedspread and lavender drapes, consider adding a lavender rug and throw pillows to the room.

4 Choose wood furniture or accents in shades of wood that are either darker or lighter than the knotty pine. You can decorate with wood in a room that has knotty pine panelling; you just don't want to use more knotty pine as it will overload the room. Pick a wood that will look distinctive from the knotty pine, such as oak, mahogany, cedar, cherry, maple or rosewood. You can use wood furniture for bookshelves, tables, chests or bureaus.

Tips and warnings

Select furniture that strikes you as having a country or rustic style.

In Step 4, feel free to paint a few parts of these pieces in one of the colours from your decorating scheme. For example, if your colour scheme is red and green, you can paint the edges or legs of a table green.
