How to Design a Patio Awning or Gazebo

Building a patio roof or gazebo will enlarge a home's living space. Cooking, relaxing or having social gatherings for friends and family becomes easier with a covered patio. The awning design or gazebo might be covered with more expensive materials, such as plywood and cedar shakes, but inexpensive materials are also workable. A solid framework is always necessary, but a simple lattice or bamboo roof will provide good shade. Plan to construct the patio covering in materials that harmonise with the home's roof, and make sure the overall design works well with the neighbourhood.

Instructions

1 Sketch the home's backyard area. Include dimensions of the patio and house facade where the awning or gazebo will be constructed. Draw a simple roof space that will fit proportionately to the house roof. Experiment with a flat roof, hip roof or A-frame roof. Measure a patio space at least 9-by-12 feet for an awning or gazebo.

2 Plan to build a framework of wood post material at least 8-by-8 inches. Design the rafters to be placed on 16-inch centres. Draw the structure to stand alone, if the budget is limited. Tie the rafters into house rafters for more stability if the budget will allow. Plan to construct the framework of pressure-treated lumber or cedar from 2-by-6-inch boards.

3 Get ideas for a roof covering from home design books or magazines, but drive around the neighbourhood to see what other families are using. Plan to construct the roof materials from asphalt shingles, cedar shakes, metal sheeting or cedar wood construction for a pergola effect, for example. Consider building a wood framework to be covered with a fabric awning made-to-order by a manufacturer. Avoid the cheapest of materials, which is plastic corrugated panels. Use, instead, recycled metal sheeting for a roof covering.

4 Design a gazebo, which will be more enclosed, if the patio awning space needs privacy. Plan to use lattice work or wood strips to enclose the wall areas. Use screws to install 2-by-2-inch strips of wood on 4-inch centres to create screening. Consider enclosing just the top section of each wall to create an umbrella effect if extremely bright sun will be the norm. Add more shade to the gazebo enclosure with hanging plants or a small cloth awning around the perimeter.

5 Add amenities to the patio space. Include wall shelves on one side to hold cooking items. Build a table and benches under the gazebo to use for meals during three seasons of the year. Run outdoor patio lights around the circumference of the space for a romantic touch. Don't plan to cook under the space, since a cooking fire poses a risk. Install a grill a few feet from the covered roof.

Tips and warnings

Use colourful awnings or bright roofing only in beach areas or tropical areas, as a rule. Install materials that blend well with the home's exterior. Create the awning or gazebo space to look as if it was part of the original home design.

Secure a stand-alone gazebo or patio awning to posts affixed to a concrete base with angle iron. Wind can easily rip a patio roof cover loose and send it hurling through the air.
