The Fn, or Function, key is used in combination with each of the F1 through F12 keys to perform specific operations on an HP notebook, such as enabling or disabling the wireless adaptor, locking or unlocking the keyboard, or switching between dual monitors. You can disable the Fn key in the basic input/output system (BIOS) -- a low-level software that allows users to change how the computer's hardware behaves -- so that you can execute the functions assigned to the F1 through F12 keys without holding down the Fn key simultaneously.

Skill level:Easy

Instructions

1 Turn on or restart the computer. Press "F10" at the HP boot screen to load the BIOS Setup Utility.

2 Use the directional pad to select the "System Configuration" tab. Use the up- and down-arrow keys to select "Action Keys Mode."

3 Press "Enter." Use the directional pad to select the "Enabled" option. Press "Enter" to disable the Fn key.

4 Press "F10" to save the changes and exit the BIOS Setup Utility.
