Regardless of how reliable your Compaq Presario laptop may be, you may need to replace a key component such as the CPU or the display. Replacing or upgrading components laptop may seem daunting, as laptops lack the ease of access found in most desktops. Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Electrostatic discharge strap5mm nut driverflathead screwdriverPhillips-head screwdriver

Instructions

1 Attach an electrostatic discharge strap to your wrist. Connect the other end to something metal to keep yourself grounded. Wear the strap at all times while working on your Compaq, as static electricity can severely damage your laptop.

2 Lay the laptop facedown on a table or desk. Disconnect the power cord and remove the battery. Press the release latch above the battery and slide the battery out of the laptop base.

3 Remove the hard drive and Future Bay. The hard drive is located opposite the battery. Remove the single screw holding the drive in place and slide it out of the laptop base. The Future Bay is located next to the battery. Slide the release lever to the unlocked position and slide the Future Bay out of the laptop.

4 Remove the memory. Locate the memory cover in the front corner of your Compaq. Remove the screw holding the cover in place. Remove the cover. Use two fingers to release the locks holding the memory sticks in place. Lift the memory sticks up and out of the memory bay.

5 Remove the LED bezel. With the laptop still facedown, remove the two screws near the back of the laptop holding the bezel in place. Turn the laptop over and gently pry up the bezel with a flathead screwdriver. Use gentle but constant pressure and the bezel should pop off.

6 Remove the keyboard. Lift the keyboard up and gently fold it over onto the touch pad. Under the keyboard is a large heatspreader, held in place by four screws. Remove the screws and lift the heatspreader out of the laptop, revealing the keyboard ribbon. Gently disconnect the ribbon from the motherboard and remove the keyboard. Disconnect the ribbon connecting the mouse and touchpad to the motherboard as well.

7 Remove the heatsink assembly. Lift up the right side of the heatsink assembly and gently pull it to the right. Disconnect the assembly from the motherboard. This reveals the processor.

8 Turn the screw on the corner of the processor counter-clockwise for a half turn. Carefully grab the processor by its sides and lift it straight up out of its socket. Once done, disconnect the modem from the motherboard by disconnecting the cable and prying open the latches on the side of the modem. Lift the modem out of the laptop base.

9 Remove the display. Close the display panel and remove the two hinge covers by prying them off with a flathead screwdriver. Remove the screws on the top and back of the hinges as well as the cable stabiliser clip from the left hinge. Open the display and disconnect the backlight and display cables. Gently grab each side of the display panel and lift straight up to remove it.

10 Remove the top cover by turning your Compaq face down and removing the seven screws along the edges of the laptop base. Turn the laptop back over and remove the four screws holing it down. Lift the top cover straight up to remove it from the base.

11 Remove any other components attached to the motherboard, including speakers and ports. Remove the remaining screws attaching the motherboard to the laptop base. Lift the motherboard up and out of the base to remove it.

Tips and warnings

Keep track of all of your screws so you can return them to their proper positions when reassembling your laptop.

Avoid working on carpet or any other surface that may create static electricity.
