Mountain laurel, or Kalmia latifolia, is a shrub with glossy green leaves and flowers that range in colour from white to rose to pink depending on the specific variety. The flowers are clumped together, so you can either draw one or a large clump for a still life drawing. The flower has five petals, each with a peaked centre, so you can draw the basic outline of the flower as a pentagon. The stamens are long, curved and divide each of the 10 points on the decagon.

Instructions

1 Place a sketch pad on a work surface and open it to a blank page. Lightly draw the overall layout of the drawing on your paper with a pencil. For example, maybe you are drawing a mountain laurel flower that has dropped onto a rock stepping stone on a garden path. Draw the outline of the stepping stone and the overall landscape of the picture.

2 Draw a pentagon onto the stepping stone to the scale that you would like the flower to be. Add small peaks to the centre of each line along the pentagon. Erase the straight lines of the pentagon so that the peaks now form the outline of the flower.

3 Fill in the details of the centre of the flower including the stamens and anthers. Draw a narrow stamen along the line of each corner of the pentagon and at the centre of each peak. Make them curve inward toward the petals of the flower. Draw a small oval anther at the end of each stamen. Shade the anther with the side of your pencil lead.

4 Draw a light circle in the centre of the flower and shade around it with small lines that extend outward from the circle.

5 Shade the centre of each petal lightly with the edge of a pencil lead so that it looks rounded. Shade the sides of the stamen along the curve so that they appear to curve gracefully. Add details to the rest of the drawing to complete the picture.

Tips and warnings

Draw a large clump of flowers in a vase for a spring still-life drawing. Use an actual flower as a reference when drawing it.
