How to Draw a Portrait of a Person

The ability to compose a portrait is probably the most admired of all the drawing and painting skills. Non-artists are often left awestruck by a skilfully crafted portrait drawing or painting. But no artist becomes an outstanding portrait artist easily. Even artists with a natural aptitude for drawing still need to work at maximising their potential. One of the key qualities required for drawing portraits successfully is good observational skills. No two faces are the same, and even similar faces have subtle differences.

Things you need

PaperPencilEraserEither a model or an image to draw from

Instructions

1 Make a very rough sketch of the head and face. Erase and adjust parts of the features that look out of proportion. In this sketch, the main thing to focus on is the proportion of the person's face rather than a likeness.

2 Sketch the head and face and in this sketch give the facial features more detail. Begin by sketching the hair and the shape of the face. Then, start creating a likeness of the person by concentrating on the main facial features.

3 Start drawing your portrait. Work on first drawing the hair. Drawing hair will help when it comes to depicting the shape of the face, and will also be an aid to drawing in proportion.

4 Focus on drawing the face, beginning with the forehead. Concentrate on drawing any lines and creases, and then move down to draw the eyebrows and the eyes. Shade in and around the eyes while constantly observing the subject.

5 Draw the nose and use shading and lines to build up this part of the face. Next, draw the mouth. Take your time when drawing the lines and curves of the lips, because, as with the eyes, the mouth will help both distinguish a person and give them expression.

6 Draw the chin and work upward to the ears. Draw the ears using lines and subtle shading. Shade in the rest of the face, adding noticeable lines, especially around the cheek area.

Tips and warnings

Practice drawing different facial features. Though the face having the right proportions is vitally important in a drawing, it will account for nothing if the facial features are badly drawn.

If you make too many mistakes early on in your drawing, start again. It would be a mistake to ignore the errors and then come back to correct them later in the drawing. Once you have corrected the early mistakes, you may find errors regarding proportion with the later parts of your drawing.
