How to Draw Floor Plans for Two Story Houses

Drawing floor plans for two-story houses doesn't require an architectural degree as it once did. It does require a little bit of "divide and conquer" thinking, however. You may want to first conquer designing a one-story home before trying to design two stories, though the design principles of these two projects are essentially the same. Before tackling this project, learn the needs of those who will occupy the home. By drawing your own floor plan, you save money that you would have given to an architect to complete this project.

Skill level:Moderate

Instructions

1 Make or obtain a 3-D sketch of the exterior of the proposed house. Trace a photo of an existing house to make this sketch or do the drawing yourself. Don't worry about making exactly straight lines. Save those for the floor planning stage. The purpose of making a sketch is to get a sense of what the finished home will look like, something that's difficult to discern from a floor plan.

2 Estimate the size of the house's modules from the sketch you draw. Modules are the large, rectangular blocks composing the whole structure of the house. For example, a Dutch colonial home has a single module. An "L" shaped house will have two rectangular modules at right angles.

3 Draw, with a ruler and paper, rectangles whose proportions and orientation match those of the modules you measured. The rectangles represent the exterior walls of the house for the lower story. You'll obviously have to scale down the measurements you made. For example, if the house has a single rectangular module measuring 40 by 50 feet, draw a rectangle measuring 8 by 10 inches.

4 Draw the same rectangles on another sheet of paper. These represent the exterior of the house's second story.

5 Draw, on the first story's plan, one rectangle for each room in the house's first story. As with the outer rectangle, the interior rectangles represent the walls of the rooms. Make sure you include at least these rooms: kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom and laundry.

6 Draw another rectangle indicating where you want the staircase to appear on the first story. This rectangle's length should be significantly greater than its width.

7 Erase the short ends of the staircase rectangle to indicate the where the stairs open onto the first and second floors.

8 Draw a series of equally spaced lines inside the stair rectangle that are perpendicular to the rectangle's long sides. These represent the staircase's individual stairs. Do not try to draw the exact number of steps you think the staircase should have. The lines are only a graphical convention meant to indicate the location of the staircase.

9 Lay the second story's plan atop the first so that the exterior rectangles line up. Trace the staircase rectangle onto the second story plan.

10 Take the second story plan off the first story plan and draw rectangles for the rooms, as you did for the first story's plan.

11 Draw the plan views of the smaller, non-structural elements of the house, such as doors, fixtures and cabinets to complete the plans for the two-story house. You can find these views in other architectural plans, such as those returned by a search for "house plans" on the University of Oregon library site. Also, read books on the graphical conventions of architecture to learn how to draw these plan views. "Architectural Graphic Standards" is one such book.
