How to Dye Your Hair Black With Pink Chunks

Dying your hair unnatural colours, or even multiple colours moves hair dye beyond usual notions of fashion and beauty to a way of expressing your personality. Colouring your hair black and pink is one way to show your inner rebel to the world. But achieving the multicolour style is easier said than done. While it can certainly be done, you'll need to be careful not to let the dyes bleed into each other.

Instructions

1 Prepare your hair for bleaching. You need to bleach your hair before dying it black and pink so the colours show up correctly. Wash your hair one or two days before you bleach it, but not the day you plan to bleach. Your hair should be free of products or treatments.

2 Mix the ingredients in the bleaching kit according to package directions. Wear latex gloves to protect your hands. Apply the bleach to your hair using the applicator brushes in the bleaching kit. Once you've applied a uniform layer of bleach all over your hair, cover your hair with a shower cap.

3 Let the bleach process your hair for about 20 minutes, but use caution. Bleach can be damaging. If your hair is fragile, brittle or already prone to damage, leave the bleach in for 15 minutes at a maximum. Rinse the bleach out of your hair, then shampoo and condition. You will need freshly-washed hair for the dyeing process.

1 Divide hair into sections. Consider where you want the pink, chunky sections, and the overall pink-to-black ratio you want. Form strips of aluminium foil and keep them handy during the dyeing process.

2 Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around your hairline to keep the dye from tinting your skin.

3 Don a fresh pair of latex gloves. Mix black hair dye according to package directions. Apply the dye in a thin, even coat to each section of hair you want to colour black. Use a mirror to see the back of your head, or have a friend help you. Cover each section of dyed black hair with strips of foil as you go, until you've applied the dye and the foil to all sections of hair you want to colour black. The only uncovered sections of your hair should be the ones you want to dye pink.

4 Wear a fresh pair of leather gloves. Mix the pink dye according to the package directions. Apply the pink dye in an even coat to all of the uncovered sections of your hair. Use a mirror if necessary to see the back of your head, or have a friend help.

5 Leave the foil wraps in your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap. Let the dye process your hair according to the time recommended on the package directions, at least one hour. When the time's up, remove the shower cap and foil, and rinse your hair thoroughly.
