A bad dye job can destroy your hair, causing you to wait months--even years--for the damaged goods to grow out. Because of this fear, women tend to seek a colourist when changing hair colours, spending unnecessary amounts of money. But the fact is, you can replace regular salon colour treatments with a home hair dye--safely, effectively and without causing permanent damage to your hair.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

AvocadoSmall jar mayonnaiseHair colour and tonerGloss (optional)Leave-in conditionerHair sunscreen

Instructions

1 Prep your hair with a conditioner. Invest in a high quality deep conditioning treatment, or make one at home. To make: mix a small jar of mayonnaise with half of an avocado until it becomes a creamy consistency. Apply the mixture to hair, concentrating on ends. Leave in for 20 minutes and rinse out.

2 Remove dead ends from hair. Hair dye is absorbed at a higher rate into the most damaged parts of your hair (usually the hair's ends and the tips of your bangs). If you have waited longer than three months since your last haircut, head to the salon for a trim and ask the stylist to cut at least 1 inch off of the length.

3 Purchase a salon-quality hair colour. Head to your local beauty supply store. Enlist the salesperson for help--they should be trained to advise customers on which colouring products bring the best results for particular hair types. You will likely end up buying a couple bottles, including a colour and a developer.

4 Test out the hair colour before taking the big plunge. Apply your chosen colour to a small strand of your hair. Once rinsed and dry, you will know if the colour is right for you.

5 Follow the directions on the packaging--exactly. Leaving a hair dye in longer than stated could result in severely damaged hair.

6 After you've rinsed out the colour, follow with a deep conditioning treatment.

7 Be kind to your hair in days following your at-home colour. In the next couple of weeks, your hair will be more prone to damage from the sun and harsh styling from hairdryers, curling irons and flatirons. Avoid these tools for about two weeks to avoid damaging your new hair. Wear a hair sunscreen and use a leave in-conditioner on the ends of hair every day.

Tips and warnings

Know the types of hair dyes. Permanent hair colour will remain until your hair grows out (with the exception of some red tones, which may fade more easily). A semi-permanent colour will last anywhere from two to eight weeks.

Consider applying a gloss to your hair after it's been coloured. This will help to seal in the colour even more as well as boost your hair's overall shine factor.

Don't attempt to lighten your hair more than one to two shades from your current hair colour. It may turn out orange, or worse--fall out. Because working with bleach can be dangerous for your hair, going significantly lighter is a task best suited for a colourist.
