How to dye your hair with household items

Whether you are dying your hair to cover the grey, enhance your natural colour or leave your natural colour far behind, using hair dye can become an expensive and damaging habit. Regularly dying hair can strip moisture from the hair shaft, leaving your hair dry and brittle. While harsh chemicals and big price tags tend to produce a more dramatic result, many people are seeking alternatives to commercial hair dye. Luckily, there are items in most of our homes that can dye hair successfully.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

1 tbsp lemon juice3 cups camomile tea1 tbsp saffron6 cups of brewed black coffee or steeped black tea1/2 cup beetroot juice1/2 cup carrot juiceLarge saucepanBucketStrainer

Instructions

Homemade blonde hair dye

1 Prepare camomile tea by steeping three teabags in three cups of boiling water.

2 Allow the tea to cool to room temperature, then add the lemon juice and saffron.

3 Strain the tea bags and saffron strands from the mixture and reserve the liquid in your saucepan.

4 Rinse the liquid through your hair at least 15 times by pouring it over your head, catching the liquid in the bucket, then re-rinsing the dye through your hair again and again.

5 Allow the dye to penetrate your hair for 15 minutes following your final rinse. Remove the dye by washing thoroughly and conditioning afterwards.

Homemade brown hair dye

1 Brew six cups of strong coffee or six cups of strong black tea. Allow them to cool. Coffee and tea are just as effective as potent natural dyes in enhancing natural brunette hair and darkening lighter hair.

2 Rinse the liquid through your hair at least 15 times by pouring it over your head, catching the liquid in the bucket, then re-rinsing the dye through your hair again and again.

3 Allow the dye to penetrate your hair for 15 minutes following your final rinse. Remove the dye by washing thoroughly and conditioning afterwards.

Homemade red hair dye

1 Mix the beetroot juice and carrot juice together in your saucepan. Both of these juices can be found in health food shops or, if you have your own juicer, make them at home.
