How to dye your hair with sweetened kool-aid

Dying your hair with Kool Aid powder is an alternative to harsh chemical hair dyes. When applied properly, this dye can last for several weeks. While using unsweetened Kool Aid powder is the best choice, sweetened powder works as well. While the colour looks vibrant on light hair, on dark hair you should only expect a tint of colour. If you want an extreme colour change, visit a salon and have your hair bleached before dying it.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Leave-in conditionerPetroleum jellyBowl3 packets of sweetened Kool Aid powderWaterConditionerSpoonGlovesShower capTowel

Instructions

1 Apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to the hair. Allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes. Don't wash it out before applying the hair colour.

2 Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the forehead and the tops of the ears. This makes washing the colour from the skin easier.

3 In a bowl, mix three packets of the Kool Aid flavour of your choice with enough water to thicken the mixture. Stir in a generous amount of hair conditioner. The sugar in sweetened Kool Aid powder makes the hair extremely sticky, so adding extra conditioner will help combat the stickiness.

4 Place gloves on your hands, and apply the Kool Aid mixture evenly over the hair. Once covered, place a shower cap over the hair and wrap it in a towel. Keep this on the hair overnight.

5 Wash the colour out the next morning. Add more conditioner to the hair before washing with shampoo to remove the sticky residue. It might take several washings before the stickiness goes away.

6 Apply a leave-in conditioner to the hair. Gently comb out any knots and tangles.

Tips and warnings

The longer you leave the Kool Aid in your hair, the longer the colour lasts.

The sugar in Kool Aid may attract insects to your hair. Be careful when using this method during warmer months, especially if you have an allergy to bees or other insects.

Avoid getting this dye near your eyes, as the chemicals in sweetened Kool Aid irritate the eyes and nose.
