How to fill out a blank check

When a customer opens a current account, the bank issues paper checks that include the bank routing number, check number and account number. When issued, the checks are blank with no information filled in, such as the payee's name, payer's signature or the dollar amount. Issuing a check for payment requires you to fill out a blank check with detailed information.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Ink penCheckbook

Instructions

1 Open your checkbook to the first available blank check and use your ink pen to write the date on the top right line designated for the date. Use any format for the date, such as 12-1-2011, 12/1/2011 or December 1, 2011. Post-date the check by writing in a future date if you want the check cashed later; otherwise write the current date.

2 Locate the "Pay to the Order Of" line and write the name of the check recipient. Do not write "Cash" on the line, as anyone can cash the check if you do so.

3 Write the numeric dollar amount in the small box to the right. For example, if the check amount is five hundred dollars write £325 in the box. Most checks include the dollar sign ($) on the outside of the box.

4 Write the dollar amount in words on the line below the payee's name and mark a straight line down the line to the word "Dollars". The additional line prevents anyone from adding words to the check to increase the amount.

5 Sign your name on the lower line on the write side of the check. Write the reason for the check on the "Memo" line on the left side at the bottom.

6 Notate the date, payee's name and dollar amount in your check ledger or journal, located at the front or back of your checkbook. Tear the check out and give it to the recipient.

Tips and warnings

All checks require a signature for cashing or depositing in a bank account.

Post-dated checks are not valid prior to the date on the check.

To avoid fraud, do not sign a blank check, as your signature is a legal tender and anyone can cash the check by filling in a name and dollar amount.
