How to fix audio delay on an MP4 video

MP4 files are among the most downloaded video files on the Internet. The small sizes and outstanding image quality makes MPEG 4 one of the best codecs for distribution. Unfortunately, because of the error of an amateur encoder or problems associated with transcoding, the audio and video tracks can become out of sync. The audio can be delayed badly, causing the video to look like an old kung-fu movie. Luckily, there are many easy solutions to combat audio delay.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

VLC media playerAdobe PremiereMP4 file with Audio Delay

Instructions

1 Open VLC media player on your computer. From the "Media" menu, select "Open File."

2 Locate the MP4 file using either the Windows Explorer or MacOS Finder interface. Select the file, then click the "Open" button.

3 Select "Track Synchronization" from the "Tools" menu. Click the "+" (plus) or "-" (minus) button in the "Audio/Video" category to adjust the "Advance of Audio over Video."

1 Open Adobe Premiere. Create a new project, name it, then click the "OK" button.

2 Right-click in the "Project" window, and select the "Import ..." command. Using the Windows Explorer or MacOS Finder, locate the MP4 file with the Audio/Video Sync problems.

3 Drag the MP4 file down to the "Timeline" window. Zoom in or out of the timeline by pressing the "+" or "-" buttons on the keyboard. Zooming in will allow for more precise adjustments of the Audio/Video Sync.

4 Right-click the MP4 file in the "Timeline" window, and select "Unlink." This will allow you to move the audio portion of the MP4 file back and forth to adjust the Audio/Video Sync. Experiment by moving the audio portion a small amount, then pressing the play button to see if the audio delay has been fixed. After a few tries, the problem should be fixed.

5 Select "Export: Media ..." from the "File" menu. Select the desired codec and video size settings. Default settings work well; unless you have a specific favourite compressor, MP4 can be selected, too. Click the "OK," button and Adobe Premiere will take you to Adobe Media Encoder.

6 Check the settings to make sure they match what was set in Adobe Premiere. Set the location to be saved to, then click the "Start Queue" button. This will output a video file with a fixed audio track.

Tips and warnings

The Audio/Video Sync in VLC media player can also be adjusted by pressing the "J" and "K" buttons on the keyboard. "J" will set the Audio/Video Sync by -50 milliseconds. Pressing the "K" button will set the Audio/Video Sync by +50.

In Adobe Media Encoder, if left to defaults, the file will save in the location of the original. This is fine if using a format other than MP4, but an MP4 file will replace the original, leading to possible problems later.
