The 2004 Chevrolet Malibu was manufactured with electric window motors, which can wear out and require replacement. These motors use gears to drive the window regulator, which operates the glass inside the door. The average backyard mechanic can replace the power window motor in a Malibu in about 30 minutes.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Socket setScrewdrivers

Instructions

1 Check the fuses at the driver's side fuse panel by pulling out the fuses one by one with the provided fuse puller and replacing any that have a blown filament. Fuses blow for a reason, often temporary (water in the switch or a surge of power from a loose connection). If a blown fuse is to blame, check it often.

2 Remove the screw on the inside of the interior door handle by turning it counterclockwise.

3 Pull the door panel from the pop rivets that hold it to the door metal, starting at the corner and working around until the plastic pop rivets are all freed. Set the panel aside, away from the work area.

4 Inspect the window regulator and power motor operation to determine the fault. If the glass has slid from the window regulator track, it can usually be repositioned and secured without much effort. If the track is broken, it will require complete replacement. If the power motor is non-operational, then it can be taken out at this time and replaced.

5 Remove the power window motor by disconnecting its wiring harness adaptor plug (pull it apart once the catch is released), then turning its mount bolts counterclockwise and pulling the motor directly away from the window regulator's gears.

6 Replace the unit by pushing it onto the regulator gears, then securing its mount bolts in a clockwise direction. Press the wiring harness adaptor together until it clicks.

7 Replace the door panel by pressing it to the door metal until all the pop rivets are secured into their mount holes. Some of these rivets may need to be replaced; they can become brittle after years of service.

8 Secure the door handle screw by turning it clockwise.

Tips and warnings

Check the operation of all windows on your Malibu to determine if it is one or all windows that are inoperative.

Disconnect the battery before starting this procedure.
