How to Flush the Drainpipe on an AC Unit

Over time, the unit designed to keep you cool during those sweltering months will become dirty and clogged with debris. The air conditioner drainpipe -- also known as drain line -- removes the build-up of condensation that naturally occurs inside the unit and deposits the excess liquid outside your home. Regularly flushing the drainpipe will keep it clean and clear of clogs. A clogged drainpipe will cause the excess condensation to drip from the unit and into your home.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

ScrewdriverWater hose nozzle attachmentWater hoseFunnelChlorine bleach

Instructions

1 Unplug the air conditioner power cord from the outlet. Flip the breaker off for air conditioners hard-wired into your electric.

2 Remove the front panel from the unit. Remove any screws that secure the panel in its place with a screwdriver. Disconnect the drainpipe -- typically located near the bottom of the drain pan -- from the unit.

3 Secure the proper size water hose nozzle attachment to the drainpipe. Nozzle attachments are available at home improvement stores and come in a variety of sizes. Attach the water hose to your faucet.

4 Turn the faucet on and allow the water to flow slow but steady through the drainpipe. Let the water run for several minutes before turning the water off and removing the nozzle attachment from the drainpipe.

5 Place a funnel inside the drainpipe. Pour a mixture of equal parts chlorine bleach and water slowly into the funnel and let the mixture run through the drainpipe. The bleach mixture will kill fungus -- such as mould and mildew -- growing in the pipe.

6 Reattach the nozzle attachment to the drainpipe (after waiting 15 minutes). Then turn on the faucet to flush the line clean for several seconds.

7 Turn off the faucet and remove the nozzle from the drainpipe. Reattach the drainpipe and secure the front panel back on the air conditioner unit.

Tips and warnings

Wear rubber gloves when working with bleach to prevent possible skin irritation.

Never mix bleach with ammonia or products containing ammonia. The resulting fumes are toxic.
