How to get an english passport

You can obviously get an English Passport if you’re a legal citizen of the United Kingdom, but you may also be qualified for an English passport under a handful of other circumstances. If you’re a citizen of an overseas British territory, a British citizen living overseas or a British protected person, you qualify for an English passport. If your mother was born in the United Kingdom and you were born after January 1, 1983, you also automatically qualify for an English passport. To obtain an English passport you’ll have to fill out paperwork and provide sufficient proof of identity.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Passport application formPassport photoBirth certificateNational ID card (optional)Current passport (optional)

Instructions

1 Fill out a passport application form. You can fill out the form online, obtain one from the local post office (UK only) or request that a form be mailed to you either via the telephone or the Internet. Call the passport advice hotline at 0300-222-0000 or click on the "Request a Passport Application" link in the Resources section to request your form.

2 Have your completed passport application countersigned by someone who has known you for at least 10 years, holds a valid Irish or English passport and is willing to write her passport number on the form. (Note that this only applies if you are getting a new passport for the first time or are replacing a lost passport.)

3 Obtain a regulation passport photo. It must be 45mm high by 35mm wide and should be taken against a clean background. You cannot have any objects in the photo or anything obstructing your face, and you should make a neutral facial expression with your mouth closed. Have your counter-signatory from Step 2 sign and write “I certify that this is a true likeness of [Your Name]” on the back of each passport photo.

4 Provide proof of your identity. If you live in the UK (or were born in the UK and live abroad), you can use your national ID card and birth certificate. If you live in a British overseas territory you can use your current passport and birth certificate.

5 Bring all of the required materials, along with the relevant application fee (see Resources), to your local post office to make use of the “Check and Send” program if you live in the UK. If you live outside of the UK, you will have to mail all the materials in yourself.

Tips and warnings

You will have to wait between two and three weeks from the date of your application until you receive your new passport, depending on your method of application (“Check and Send” takes two weeks while online or mailed-in applications take up to three weeks).

You need to send in the original version of your identification documents, not copies.

Note that if you are renewing a pre-existing passport, the process is much simpler. See Resources for details.
