How to Get Rid of a Mildew Smell in a Trunk

The antique trunk bought for a bargain, suddenly does not seem so special once it is brought home and opened up. Whether from old musty paper lining the inside of the trunk or dampness, mildew smells can ruin the beauty of the new found treasure, but it is not hopeless. Getting rid of mildew smells in a trunk can be done at home, with a little elbow grease and patience, and before long this old treasure will smell like new.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

ChairPaint scraperDish detergentSpongeStainPaint brushKitty litterNewspaper

Instructions

1 Remove any paper, paint or stain on the inside of the trunk, all of which can harbour mildew smells. Use a scraper to remove the paper or paint, then wash down the inside of the trunk with a mild detergent and water using a sponge.

2 Place the trunk outside in the fresh air and sunlight, being careful it does not get wet from rain or sprinklers. Prop the lid of the trunk open using a small chair placed inside the trunk and resting the lid on it. Leave outside for several days or until completely dry.

3 Set an open bag of kitty litter inside the trunk if the smell still lingers, even if not as strong. Close the lid and leave for one week.

4 Open the lid and remove the kitty litter, and if any hint of mildew smell is still there try filling the inside of the trunk with crumpled up newspaper and placing bars of unwrapped soap among the newspaper. Close the lid and let sit another week.

5 Remove all the newspaper and soap. Smooth the inside of the trunk with fine sandpaper. Wipe down with a clean cloth and apply a stain or shellac to bring out the wood.

Tips and warnings

The inside of the trunk can be lined with fresh wallpaper instead of staining.

Keep children and pets away from the open boot with the lid propped open.
