Untreated gasoline spills cause gasoline odour. Lubricants and hundreds of other chemicals in gasoline cause the strong odour in garages. Inhaling the chemicals from gasoline vapours can cause adverse health effects. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, breathing gasoline vapours can cause headaches, nausea, confusion, throat irritation and breathing difficulties. Promptly removing gasoline spills from garage floors eliminates the harmful vapours and prevents health problems. Clean garage floors with basic supplies to completely eliminate gasoline odours.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

RespiratorWork glovesClay kitty litterBroom3 gallon plastic bucket3 gallons warm waterLiquid dish soapNylon scrub brushGarden hose1/4 cup trisodium phosphate

Instructions

1 Put on a respirator to prevent inhaling the gasoline odours. Wear work gloves to prevent touching any gasoline.

2 Pour an even layer of clay cat litter over any fresh spills. Keep the cat litter on the garage floor for 30 minutes to fully absorb the gasoline. Sweep up the cat litter with a broom.

3 Fill a 3-gallon plastic bucket with 1 gallon of warm water. Squirt about 1 tsp of liquid dish soap directly onto each gasoline stain.

4 Dip a nylon scrub brush in the warm water. Scrub each stain with the scrub brush to loosen the gasoline from the floor. Keep the soapy solution on the stains for 10 minutes.

5 Rinse the garage floor with water from a garden hose. Allow the floor to air-dry.

6 Inspect the garage for remaining gasoline odour. If the odour remains, fill the plastic bucket with 2 gallons of warm water and 1/4 cup of trisodium phosphate. Thoroughly mix the solution.

7 Scrub a 3-foot by 3-foot section of the garage floor with the solution, using the nylon scrub brush. Rinse the section with water from the garden hose.

8 Scrub the remaining 3-foot by 3-foot sections of the garage floor with the solution. Thoroughly rinse each section before proceeding to the next. Clean the entire garage floor with the solution.

9 Allow the garage floor to air-dry when finished.

Tips and warnings

You can substitute baking soda for the kitty litter.

You can substitute powdered dishwasher detergent for the liquid dish soap.

Do not use a wire brush, as it can permanently damage your garage floor.

Read the manufacturer's directions on the trisodium phosphate container for safety purposes.
