How to Heal Lips Damaged by Cold Sores

Cold sores on the lips are caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus. The virus is contagious, even if there are no signs of an outbreak, and can be passed on through activities such as skin contact, kissing and sharing cups. Cold sores will normally disappear on their own in about a week without treatment. Although there's no permanent cure or way to prevent the cold sores from recurring, there are various treatment methods that can help your lips heal quicker

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Vitamin CMultivitaminsTopical lidocaineAloe vera oil, tea tree oil or manuka oilCotton swab

Instructions

1 Load up on vitamin C and take a multivitamin daily. You want to boost your immune system as much as possible since an outbreak is often caused by a weakness in the immune system.

2 Drink at least 1 gallon of water daily. You need to flush your body of all the toxins to help your immune system fight the virus.

3 Don't pick at or squeeze the cold sores on your lips. Although it may seem tempting, this can actually cause permanent scarring and further spread the infection to other parts of your body.

4 Consider the use of an ointment. Topical lidocaine creams are good over-the-counter options to help heal your lips quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help reduce some of the symptoms caused by cold sores.

5 Avoid strenuous or stressful activities. These types of activities can actually cause new cold sores to emerge.

6 Apply aloe vera, tea tree oil or manuka oil to your lips with a cotton swab. These antibacterial oils are a natural alternative for those looking to avoid pharmaceutical options.

Tips and warnings

Direct contact with your cold sores should be avoided. Always wash your hands thoroughly if you end up touching your cold sores.
