How to Install 20 GA Choke Tubes

Shotguns are produced in a range of gauges that include 410, 20 and 12. The gauge of the gun determines the size of the shell that can be fired and the resulting amount of lead or steel shot that can be loaded into the shell. Oftentimes manufacturers will design 20-gauge and other guns to accept choke tubes that pattern or change the pattern that the shot produces when fired. Full, modified and improved are a few of the choke patterns available for 20-gauge shotguns.

20-gauge shotgunPowder solventShotgun choke tubeRagChoke tube greaseChoke tube wrench

Instructions

1 Unload the 20-gauge shotgun before beginning the choke tube installation. Check the shotgun thoroughly to make sure there are no shells in the firing chamber.

2 Apply a small amount of powder solvent to a rag and thoroughly clean the threads just inside the end of the barrel. Remove any accumulated powder residue that may have been collected during firing.

3 Hold the choke tube you will be installing and apply a small amount of choke tube grease to the threads. This will help in installing the tube and will also help prevent the tube from freezing into place.

4 Carefully line up the threads of the tube with the threads in the 20-gauge shotgun barrel. Turn the choke tube so that the threads interlock and the tube begins to thread down the barrel. Continue turning the choke tube until it is seated completely in the shotgun barrel.

5 Tighten the 20-gauge choke tube securely with a choke tube wrench. Use the wrench to seat the tube securely in the barrel, however, do not over-tighten the tube as this may lock or freeze the choke tube in place, making removal difficult.
