How to Install a Condensation Line

In HVAC units, air passes through the coil of an air conditioner or heat pump. Moisture is sucked from the passing air and deposited in the condensation pan underneath. As the pan fills, it must continually drain to prevent overflowing and damage to the equipment and its surroundings. The 2006 International Mechanical Code (IMC) allows cast iron, galvanised steel, copper, polybutylene, polythene, ABS and CPVC to be used. When installing a condensate line for a mechanical system, it is important to follow some basic practices to avoid potential problems and achieve proper drainage.

Instructions

1 Locate the drainage pan and outlet on your mechanical system and attach a piece of piping, no smaller than 3/4 inch in diameter and no longer than 1 foot, to the outlet.

2 Connect a "T" joint to the end of the first piece with one hole facing up and the other down.

3 Fix a 1-inch piece of piping to the top opening and seal it with a cap or plug.

4 Attach a 4-inch piece of piping to the bottom opening. This will be the beginning of your P Trap.

5 Construct a P Trap. Attach a 90-degree angle connector to the 4-inch pipe facing the drainage destination. Attach a 1-inch piece of piping, followed by another 90-degree connector, facing up. Finish the P Trap by attaching a 2-inch piece of piping and a final 90-degree connector.

6 Install straight piping at a pitched angle away from the mechanical system. Manufacturers often recommend a drop of about 1/4 inch per foot.

7 Locate a point of disposal for the condensation. It can be discarded outside, directly into your structure's plumbing or even into the basin of a utility sink. However, it is important to check with your municipality's building code regarding disposal.

Tips and warnings

To lessen the chances of your condensation line freezing due to outdoor conditions, wrap piping with heat tape and a flexible elastomeric thermal foam.
