How to Install a DeWalt Motor in an RC Car

While upgrading and modifying your radio-controlled (RC) car can be satisfying, it tends to be an expensive process. One of the great things about electric RCs is that there are options available, if you're willing to try components that weren't specifically designed for RC cars. Learning how to install a Dewalt electric motor into your vehicle will not only give your car more pep, but it will accomplish it at a cheaper price then typical modified RC motors.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Phillips screwdriverDewalt electric motorHex wrenchSheet of paper

Instructions

1 Unscrew the transmission cover fasteners to access the motor mount. Loosen the pinion gear with the hex wrench, then slide it off the driveshaft.

2 Loosen the motor mounting screws, then slide the motor from the housing. Unplug the wires if you use connectors between the motor leads and the electronic speed control; otherwise, touch the tip of the solder iron to the wires to disconnect them from the motor, then remove the old motor from the chassis.

3 Solder the two wires onto the new Dewalt motor. Insert the motor into the compartment housing, then mount the motor with the mounting screws (but don't tighten them all the way).

4 Slide the pinion gear onto the motor's driveshaft, then tighten it with the hex wrench. Squeeze a sheet of paper between the pinion and spur gears, then finish tightening the motor mounting screws. Pull the paper out once the motor is firmly in place.

5 Turn on the electronic speed control, then apply the throttle to test that the motor is functional. If forward throttle causes the Dewalt motor to reverse, either resolder the wire leads, or engage the throttle reversal function on the transmitter.

Tips and warnings

Properly meshed gears should hum - not buzz! If your gears make sharp cutting noises, consider readjusting the meshed teeth.
