Things you need

HardieBacker 1/4 inch for floors or 1/2 inch for wallsHardiBacker mesh joint tapeModified thin set mortar (you can use the same thin set for your tile or stone typically)1/4-inch notch trowelHammer or drill1-inch roofing nails for floor; 2-inch nails for walls or backerboard screwsCarbide tip scoring toolMeasuring tapePencilClean bucketDrill with mixer paddleBroomFloor scraper

Instructions

1 Clean the wood subfloor, using your broom to remove any loose debris. Use the floor scraper to scrape anything stuck to the floor and the hammer to bang down any high nails or screws.

2 Dry lay your first sheet starting from a corner where you can fit a whole sheet without cutting if possible. Keep laying sheets overlapping the joints on subsequent rows. Do not let four corners meet. Use your tape measure and carbide scoring tool to cut any pieces that require a cut.

3 Mix thin set according to the manufacturers instructions using your bucket and drill with mixer paddle. Pick up a sheet of the backerboard and spread an even layer of thin set on the floor using the 1/4-inch notch trowel. Set the backerboard back down in the thin set and walk on it to ensure full contact with the thin set. Repeat this step until all sheets have been set in thin set.

4 Use the mesh joint tape to cover all seam joints. Use the flat side of your trowel to spread a thin layer of thin set mortar over the joints to embed the tape.

5 Use your hammer and nails or drill and backerboard screws to fasten the backerboard sheets. Stay 2 inches from the edge of the sheets placing a nail or screw every 8 inches around the perimeter and along each joist or stud that the sheet transverses.

Tips and warnings

Use only thin set mortar. Do not use liquid nail or other adhesives to install backerboard or tile.

Use a T-square or a chalk box to assist in making long straight cuts.

If you are comfortable using a circular saw or angle grinder, there are blades made for specifically cutting backerboard. These are especially useful on compound cuts.

Do not mix more thin set that you can trowel in 30 minutes.

Always wear safety glasses when cutting, using a hammer or drill or mixing thin set.

Wear rubber kitchen gloves if you have sensitive skin when trowelling thin set.
