How to Install a Laptop Hard Drive in a 5.25-Inch Drive Bay

Laptop hard drives are smaller and lighter than their desktop counterparts -- 2.5 inches wide compared with 3.5 inches wide. The largest drive bays in a desktop computer are the 5.25 inch ones, which are normally used for optical drives or front panel I/O bays. However, it is also possible to install one or more laptop hard drives into these drive bays by using an appropriate drive bay converter. There are also drive bay converters that allow you to place a laptop hard drive into a 3.5 inch drive bay in a desktop. This is typically the cheaper and more practical option if you have that size bay available.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

5.25 inch drive bay converterAvailable internal power cableSATA cable (for SATA I/II drives)IDE cable (for IDE drives)Available SATA or IDE slot on the motherboard

Instructions

1 Turn off your computer and open up the case cover. Locate an available 5.25 inch drive bay at the front of the case. Most desktop computers provide 2 or 3 of these.

2 Gently push out the front panel that covers the drive bay. Unpack the drive bay converter and ensure that you have all of the required components. These should be listed on the packaging. Insert the drive bay converter into the available 5.25 inch bay. Attach it in place using the four screws provided.

3 Install the laptop hard drive into the new drive bay. The drive bay converter will likely provide multiple expansion options, including the possibility to install a 3.5 inch hard drive, a slimline laptop optical drive or even more than one laptop hard drive.

4 Connect the SATA or IDE cable between the laptop hard drive and the motherboard. Connect the appropriate power connector from the power supply inside the computer to the back of the laptop hard drive. Replace the case cover and start up your computer. The hard drive should be automatically detected.

Tips and warnings

Always make sure that the computer is turned off whenever attaching or removing a hard disk. Hot swapping hard drives can cause damage.
