How to Install & Cut Shower Vinyl

Rigid vinyl shower panels, otherwise known as PVC wall covering, are a durable, long-lasting and affordable alternative to other shower wall coverings. PVC wall coverings, typically installed in commercial settings, are available from speciality bath suppliers. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, which is a synthetic material that is readily available and easy to work with. Rigid vinyl walls are waterproof making it a perfect choice for a shower.

Things you need

Heavyweight paperLight-tack masking tapeNewspaperUtility knifeAdhesiveRolling pinCaulking gunSilicone caulkPlastic spoonPlastic gloves

Instructions

1 Use heavyweight paper to create a template of the shower wall including cutouts for faucets and shower heads.

2 Place the template over the unfinished side of the vinyl wall covering and trace around the template. Rigid vinyl panels come in standard 4-by-8-foot sheets. If the template is larger than the panel, butt a second panel up to the first panel and tape together with light-tack masking tape. Place the template over both panels and trace the outline.

3 Lay several sheets of newspaper on a flat and level cutting surface.

4 Cut along the lines with a sharp utility knife using a metal straight edge as a guide for long lines.

5 Apply a coat of specialised rigid vinyl adhesive or PVC primer and adhesive, depending on the manufacturer's directions, to the unfinished side of the wall panel.

6 Place the wall panel up against the wall and press in place firmly.

7 Roll a rolling pin up and down and side to side over the entire wall to remove air bubbles from between the panel and wall. Press and roll quickly because the adhesive dries very quickly, usually 10 to 15 minutes.

8 Load a caulking gun with silicone caulk.

9 Apply a bead of silicone caulk along joints, corners and seams.

10 Smooth the silicone caulk with the back of a plastic spoon or a plastic gloved finger.

Tips and warnings

Apply adhesives in a well-ventilated area.

Practice cutting on scrap pieces of rigid wall vinyl.
