How to Install Drill-Press Chucks

Use a drill press for drilling large-diameter holes into wood, metal and other building materials. A drill press has a powerful motor connected to a spindle. Inside this spindle is an adaptor, called a Morse taper, with a chuck attached to the bottom end. The chuck has three jaws that work together to hold a drill bit in place for drilling. Install drill-press chucks onto the Morse taper.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

White spirit or denatured alcoholMorse taperDrill-press chuckWooden or rubber malletChuck key

Instructions

1 Apply a small amount of white spirit or denatured alcohol to a clean cloth. Wipe down the drill-press spindle, Morse taper and chuck thoroughly. Remove protective oil, grease, dirt and grime from all parts.

2 Look inside the spindle. Note the direction of the groove in the drive mechanism that receives the Morse taper.

3 Place the tapered end of the Morse taper into the spindle with the slot on the taper oriented in the same direction as the groove in the drive mechanism. Push the taper upward into the spindle, aligning the slot with the groove.

4 Tap the Morse taper into the spindle with a wooden or rubber mallet. Do not use a metal hammer, or you might damage the taper.

5 Spin the collar on the chuck so that the jaws are recessed. Place the hole in the chuck over the exposed end of the Morse taper, and slide the chuck onto the taper. Tap the chuck securely onto the taper with a wooden or rubber mallet.

6 Place a drill bit into the chuck. Spin the collar to clamp the jaws of the chuck around the bit. Tighten the chuck with the chuck key.

7 Turn on the motor. Drill a hole to test the drill press.
