How to Install Pre-Pasted Wallpaper

Wallpaper can change the entire appearance of a room, setting a general style and decor that reflects the owner's tastes. Hanging wallpaper, however, can be a messy and tedious process with hours spent measuring, gluing and smoothing each length of paper upon your wall. To remove some of the mess and shorten installation time, choose to hang pre-pasted wallpaper. Pre-pasted wallpaper contains a water-activated adhesive that simplifies the installation process by allowing you to cut, dip the paper and paste it to the wall. You'll cut out the pasting process, saving time and the frustration spent dealing with unequal paste application as well.

Instructions

Make any necessary repairs to your wall, filling and holes or cracks by packing them with joint compound. Sand the patch smooth with sandpaper. Clean the surface of the walls with a pH-neutral cleanser, taking care not to saturate the wall with liquid. Wipe away any cleanser residue using a damp sponge and then allow the wall to dry.

Place a strip of masking tape along any baseboards or trim, and then place a dust sheet along the base of the walls.

Apply a layer of acrylic sizing to the wall with a paintbrush and paint roller to create a smooth surface for the wallpaper. Cut in the sizing on the wall edges, applying the sizing from the edge inward using the brush to create a strip about 4-inchs in width. Cover the rest of the wall with the sizing using the roller, applying it in rows with the edges overlapping by about 2-inchs. Allow the sizing to dry overnight.

Measure the width of the wallpaper you're hanging using a measuring tape. Create a plumb line on the wall by drawing a vertical line with a pencil on the wall positioned at a distance that's the width of the paper less 1/2 inch from the corner of the wall. This is the line that you'll use as your wallpaper guide for placing the first two paper strips.

Test fit the wallpaper by placing the top of the paper at the ceiling line and allowing it to unroll along the wall surface to the ground. Mark the point where the paper hits the ground, and add a mark 2 inches further along the paper's length. Cut the paper at the second mark using a straightedge and a utility knife. Test fit and cut three strips of paper, maintaining a two- to three-strip lead as you go for convenience.

Fill a wallpaper tray with water and roll the wallpaper into the tray to activate the paste on the paper rear. Pull the paper from the tray and fold the ends together with the pasted sides touching. Transport to the wall while folded.

Place the top of the paper on the wall at the ceiling line, on the side of the plumb line nearest the cornet. Smooth the paper onto the wall with a smoothing brush, unfolding it as you go along. Press the overlapping corner piece into the corner and along the facing wall, smoothing it on into place.

Install the next strip of wallpaper butted against the edge of the first along the plumb line as a guide. Position the strip of paper using your hands to move it carefully while the paste is still wet. Continue placing strips onto the wall using the same process until you've covered the wall fully.

Trim the paper along the baseboard using a utility knife. Place a 6-inch broad knife along the top of the baseboard to serve as a guide for the utility knife and to hold the end of the paper in place as you cut. Take care not to cut into the wall surface with the knife as you go along.

Wipe the edges of the paper strips down with a damp sponge to remove any excess water. Go over the seams of the wallpaper strips with a seam roller to prevent the edges from rising.

Overlap the corner pieces of the wallpaper. Place a straightedge down the centre of the overlapping strips and cut through both with the utility knife. Remove the cut pieces and go over the new straight seam with a seam roller.

Use the same process that you applied to the baseboards when cutting wallpaper around windows and doors.
