Lighting a room that has a cathedral ceiling can be a challenging task due to the irregular angles. While too little light can make people strain their eyes, too much light can cause unwanted glare and cast shadows. Light focused downward will provide warmth and comfort in a room with vaulted ceilings.

Instructions

1

How to light a room with a cathedral ceiling

Choose wall pendants, light fixtures, or chandeliers that drop from the ceiling. Stringed, corded, and chained light fixtures can be hung from a cathedral ceiling to force the light toward the centre of the room. Hang the wall pendants, light fixtures or chandeliers on the slanted portion of the ceiling about six feet from the peak in the ceiling where the two vaulted portions meet. Chandeliers with globes that force the direction of the light downward will help the room seem less expansive and stark. A dimmer switch can be added to control the amount of light being produced from a hanging light fixture.

2

How to light a room with a cathedral ceiling

Add wall sconces to promote soft light around the perimeter of the room. Wall sconces provide soft illumination on the walls. Place the sconces at eye level, between five and six feet from the floor, to add a pleasant glow to the walls and to the room. Avoid placing the sconces too high on the wall or they will emphasise the height of the vaulted ceilings. Select soft white bulbs with 40 to 75 watts of illumination. Alternately, you may use candles in the sconces.

3

Avoid adding light fixtures to the peak where the vaulted ceilings come together. Placing a light fixture that close to the pinnacle of a cathedral ceiling will cast dark spots and unpleasant shadows on the walls. There is no need to fully illuminate the entire ceiling area.

4

Complement the space with sheer window treatments. Choose sheer, cotton, linen, and satin curtains in light colours to allow the maximum amount of natural light to enter the room. Natural light provides a valuable source of illumination during daylight portions of the day. Natural light adds balance and harmony to a room with cathedral ceilings.

5

Spread the light sources between several fixtures. Use a hanging pendant, wall sconce, chandelier and table lamp to provide varied lighting sources in the room. Add harmony and unity to a space with vaulted ceilings by balancing between several lighting options. Light fixtures, lamps and wall sconces also add decorative beauty to a living space.

Tips and warnings

Choose a soft pink, low-wattage bulb for a muted, non-white glow in a living space.

Turn off all the electrical power when installing an electric light fixture or when inserting a dimmer switch.
