How to Lighten Artificial Palm Trees

Artificial palm trees can be a great addition to most rooms and decors, but sometimes they can appear a bit "fake" because they lack the variation in colours on the leaves a natural palm tree would have. However, living palms trees do not always flourish indoors. Living palms also do not succeed well in areas that experience snow and long periods with reduced natural light because of seasonal changes. So artificial palms are the perfect solution if their colour or hue can be enhanced to make them appear more "natural." Fortunately lightening an artificial palm tree is quite easy.

Instructions

1 Decide if you want the entire tree lightened to a lighter hue of green or if only the top leaves or palm fronds will be lightened. The top fronds of new growth on a living palm tree are typically a lighter shade. Determine if you want to add additional colour or shading to the individual leaves and palm fronds, as well as the trunk.

2 Cover the leaves and fronds you want to remain a deeper shade of green with a black plastic bag, tarp, or canvas. Leave a crown of leaves on the top of each artificial palm tree uncovered. Place the wrapped trees in the direct sun--outdoors or in front of a window without tinting for five hours up to a few weeks, depending on the strength of the sunlight and the season. Florida and Texas summer sun can achieve results in a few hours or days; other areas will take longer to "bleach" and effectively lighten the crown.

3 Add spots, streaks, or strokes of several shades of green to add natural highlights and hues on the artificial palm tree leaves, using a paintbrush. A natural palm tree's leaves are made of several shades of green, not just one solid colour. The green is deeper along the veins, like most tree leaves.

4 Spray a highlighting mist of a lighter colour all over the artificial palm tree, using a small paint spray gun, with paint cut 1 part paint to 1 part water for a deeper shade and coverage or 1 part paint and 4 parts water for a lighter highlighting coverage. This can give the effect of natural light hitting the leaves in a room devoid of natural sunlight.

5 Apply darker shades of green to a greenish-brown to lower "older" palm leaves and add additional colour variety to the trunk of the artificial palm tree. Use a paintbrush or sponge. Many palm trees have a trunk that appears textured and hairy and feels scratchy. Achieve this look by rubbing a sponge on the trunk of an artificial palm tree.

Tips and warnings

Study pictures of real palms on the Internet or in books or take a trip to a garden centre or theme park to check out real palm trees to help you understand the look you are trying to replicate.

Craft paint, acrylic paint, or wall paints can be used to lighten artificial palm trees.

Test your paint sprayer coverage and spray out on cardboard before spraying your artificial palm tree to make sure the paint is the right thickness and that you are using the right setting for the desired outcome.

Don't spray the palm tree inside a home or building. Always spray the paint outside because a sprayer releases hundreds of paint droplets in the air. Also wear a face mask to prevent inhalation of the paint.
