The fuel pump relay in a Ford Powerstroke diesel engine is located inside the relay control panel in the engine compartment. This relay is designed to regulate power to the fuel pump. When the power train control module (PCM) wants to energise the fuel pump, it commands the fuel pump relay to turn on. The relay's internal circuitry closes, completing the electrical circuit, allowing power to flow to the fuel pump. When the fuel pump relay fails, the fuel pump will not operate. Replacement relays are available from auto parts stores and certified Ford dealerships.

Skill level:Moderate

Instructions

1 Shift the vehicle's transmission into park or first gear (manual transmission) and turn off the engine. Set the parking brake and open the bonnet.

2 Locate the relay control panel inside the engine compartment. It is generally mounted on the right side of the engine compartment between the driver's side strut tower and the engine's battery. It is a black plastic box with a diagram on top of the cover describing the various relays inside.

3 Remove the cover from the relay control panel. Locate the relay inside the panel according to the diagram on the cover.
