There are two easy methods to "lock" or dread-lock your hair with extensions. Adding dreadlocks to your hair can be a fun change of style, a nice element for a costume or a way to get creative. You can find real or synthetic lock hair extensions. With a little practice, you can even make your own locks from yarn.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Small rubber bandsDreadlock extensions, double-ended or loop

Instructions

1 Divide your hair into 1-inch sections and tie off sections at your scalp using small rubber bands.

2 Divide each section into two pieces. Take a double-ended dreadlock extension in your hand and begin to braid the lock extension together with the two pieces of your natural hair.

3 Braid the lock extension together with your hair until you've reached the end of your natural hair. Secure the end of your hair to the lock extension with a small rubber band. You will have a braid with a long tail of lock extension. Work all other sections of hair in the same manner.

4 Take another dreadlock extension and pull the fibres apart with your fingers. Then slip one end under the rubber band at your scalp to secure the second extension. Starting at the top of the braid you've just made, wrap the dreadlock extension around the outside of your braid to cover up your natural hair. Continue wrapping until your hair has been covered, then secure the end of the second lock extension to the first lock extension with a rubber band.

5 Work all sections of your hair in this manner to install lock extensions.

1 Section your hair into 1-inch sections as for the braided method. Tie a rubber band around the section as before but leave a 1-inch gap between your scalp and the rubber band instead of tying the rubber band at the scalp.

2 Take a single-loop lock extension in one hand and hold it so that the loop points up and the long tail of the lock extension points down. Pull the loop up through the hair you just sectioned in the 1-inch gap between the rubber band and your scalp.

3 Insert the tail of the lock extension through the loop and pull it tight. This will attach the lock extension to your hair. Then twist the lock extension until the tail of the extension points down and falls in line with your natural hair.

4 Repeat steps one through three until your entire head has lock extensions.

Tips and warnings

Use the braided method to lock long hair with extensions. Use the loop method to lock short hair with extensions.
