How to make a bed frame with peeler logs and sticks

Draw a sketch of the style of log bed frame you desire to create. Make a note of the dimensions. The post design is fairly easy to build. Use equally balanced and sized logs for both the head posts and the bottom posts.

2 Locate and cut trees for building your log bed. Look for unusual shaped trees with character marks, burls or twisted trunks. Standing dead timber is ideal and since it is already dry, will be ready to fashion into furniture. If live timber is harvested, cut the trees in the late fall or winter when the sap is down. It is easier to peel logs when the sap is not flowing in the tree. If live trees are cut, the logs must be dried before they are crafted into furniture.

3 Use a draw knife to scrape the exterior bark from the logs. A draw knife will leave marks that many artisans desire as they add a rustic and primitive look to the bed frame. Logs may also be machine sanded if a uniform conformity is desired. Begin sanding with 100 grit sand paper and finish the job with 200 grit.

4 Employ a hatchet or hammer and chisel to fashion tight fitting mortise and tendon joints. A chucking tool (rather like a large pencil grinder) can also be used if you prefer a machined joint. Each individual log end is tendoned to fit inside a hole routered out of an adjoining log and then bolted firmly together. Tight fitting joints are very important when crafting a log bed frame. If the joints are not tight, the bed frame will shift and wobble.

5 Apply a final sanding of all areas of the bed frame. Wipe down the frame with a damp cloth prior to applying sealing finish.

6 Finish the wood with two applications of satin finish varnish.

Tips and warnings

Always wear safety gear including ear and eye protection while working with power tools.
