How to Make a Country Wood Sign

Country wooden signs have always been popular in gift shops, antique stores, boutiques, and roadside attractions. Commercially available country signs are usually plywood, painted, then sanded to look old. But to make a more authentic, primitive looking sign that will last forever, use a small router to carve the inscriptions into solid wood.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Small hand held routerCore box bit 3/8-inch--- also called a bull nosePine lumber, 6 by 16 by 3/4 inchScrap lumber or plywood 12 by 12 by 3/4-inchPrinted fonts or stencilsTwo hand clampsBelt sander with 100 grit beltPint wood stainRag369gr can aerosol lacquer

Instructions

1 Lay out your incription on the board, using fonts or stencils for perspective and spacing. You can tape on the stencil and draw around it. If you are artistic you can just use fonts for the spacing; then hand draw your inscription.

2 Place the 3/8-inch bit into the router and tighten it down. Set the depth at approximately 1/4-inch to start out with. Clamp the scrap board to a worktable. Draw some of the fonts on the scrap board. Turn on the router and ease it down onto the scrap board, letting the bit cut into the wood. Practice pulling the router along the board following the lines of the fonts, getting the feel of it. Turn off the router and check the depth of your cut. If too shallow or too deep, adjust the depth, and test again. When satisfactory, unclamp the scrap board and clamp in the signboard.

3 Ease the router down on the board on the first font. When the bit cuts in, let the router settle in and follow the lines of the inscription. The lettering doesn't need to be perfect. Small gouges or nicks give the sign character. Rout the entire message, following the fonts that you have drawn.

4 When finished routing, spray the sign with lacquer.

5 Place a 100-grit belt on the belt sander turn it on, and apply it to the sign. Sand the entire surface of the sign. Lacquer will remain inside the letters. You can gouge, streak, beat up, or dent the sign with the edge of the sander. This adds to the weathered, rustic look. Using a rag, rub stain over the entire surface of the sign; the stain won't stick to the letters and they will stand out. Let dry, then spray lacquer over the entire surface of the sign.

Tips and warnings

You can also paint inside the letters with any colour of paint desired, or you can paint the sign and letters different colours or add designs.
