A topiary is a floral arrangement that generally uses fresh plants, such as ivy, formed into a shape such as a ball or heart. A basic topiary consists of a pot with a dowel that holds a sphere of flowers or foliage. Use artificial flowers and greenery to create an arrangement that lasts for many years. A faux topiary can be customised to include various colours and types of artificial flowers according to your taste, the season or the occasion.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Clay pot2 styrofoam balls sized to fit within the potKnifeStick or dowelGlue gunArtificial flowers and mossRibbon, optional

Instructions

1 Cut a third off of one styrofoam ball so that it can easily fit within the pot.

2 Glue the styrofoam ball to the pot with a glue gun, placing the ball so that the rounded portion is slightly sticking out from the pot.

3 Make a hole in the second styrofoam ball by placing the stick or dowel approximately an inch into the ball. The dowel should be twice as long as the pot is deep, plus 2 inches. Remove the stick or dowel.

4 Glue artificial flowers onto the second styrofoam ball using the glue gun. Cover the entire surface of the ball other than the hole made in the previous step.

5 Use the glue gun to apply glue to the end of the stick or dowel, and insert into the covered styrofoam ball. Allow to cool.

6 Insert the other end of the stick or dowel into the ball within the pot. Remove and cover the end of the stick or dowel with glue and reinsert. Allow to dry.

7 Cover the styrofoam ball within the pot with either additional artificial flowers or moss and glue.

8 Tie a ribbon around the stick or at the base of the pot to further decorate the topiary, if desired.

Tips and warnings

A low-heat glue gun may be used to keep the styrofoam from melting when applying flowers.
