How to Make a Fitted Lace Jacket

A fitted lace jacket can be a versatile accessory for both formalwear and club-wear. While people tend to think lace is too difficult to work with due to its detailed and delicate characteristics, lace is actually no more difficult than any lightweight fabric. Once you know how to take your measurements properly, you can choose a pattern and make a fitted lace jacket, adding a great accessory to your wardrobe.

Instructions

1 Take your measurements. For a fitted jacket, measurements will need to be detailed. Take down measurements from the centre of the shoulder to the tip of the bust, and then around the bicep while the arm is relaxed. (reference 2) With your arms at your sides, have a friend measure horizontally from just above one armpit to the other armpit fold on both your front and back.

2 Take measurements of your waist by simply wrapping the tape around your waist without pulling it too tight. Measure from the centre of the back of your neck to the end of your relaxed arm to find sleeve length. Shop for a fitted jacket pattern that fits your style. Take your measurements with you to ensure choosing a pattern that will fit you properly. Pattern catalogues have exhaustive selection and are available at fabric stores and online. Pay attention to the fabric suggestions made by the pattern manufacturers. Some patterns will be harder to sew with lace than others.

3 Find the right lace for your fitted jacket. Look for laces made with synthetic fibres for a material with more stretch and resilience. Heavier laces like Venise have crocheted connections in place of netting, reducing easily damaged sections on your jacket. Find a colour you like by perusing fabric stores or online fabric stores. Follow the instructions included with your pattern for purchasing the correct yardage. Pick out a thread that exactly matches your lace to avoid noticeable seams.

4 Unfold the sheets of your pattern and cut out the pieces along the solid black lines. (The dotted lines are where the seam goes.) Lay each of the pieces in the same direction on your lace to prevent the assembled pieces from looking mismatched. Use straight pins to pin the pattern pieces to the fabric before cutting. Sew some test pieces of lace on your sewing machine before starting the jacket to make sure the sewing machine settings don't tear the lace. Sew the lace pieces together according to the pattern instructions.

Tips and warnings

If you are uncertain how to read an instruction on your pattern, look it up in a sewing manual. You don't want to inadvertently ruin your material.
