How to make a flower topiary decoration

A flower topiary makes a unique centrepiece at a wedding reception or at your own dining room table. Topiaries consist of a ball-shaped floral arrangement and can be made in one, two or even three tiers. Making your own topiary, whether you use fresh, dried or silk flowers, will cost you a lot less than buying one. Choose almost any type of flower, and if you use silk flowers, the arrangement will last for years.

Things you need

Wooden dowel, 90 cm (36 inches)Hand sawPlanter potFloral foam block3 floral styrofoam balls, 20 cm (8 inch) diameterFloral wireWire cuttersFloral tapeGlue gunGreen mossRibbon, 37.5 cm (15 inches) long

Instructions

1 Cut the wooden dowel into three pieces. Two pieces should be 37.5 cm (15 inches) long and the other piece should be 15 cm (6 inches) if you want to make a three-tiered topiary. Spray paint the styrofoam balls, the planter and the wooden dowels to complement the colours of the flowers you have chosen. You may also want the colour of the planter to coordinate with your table setting or the colour of the room's walls. Allow to dry completely.

2 Position a floral block of foam firmly into the planter. Push the 15 cm (6 inch) dowel about halfway down in the centre of a foam ball. Push the dowel's other end into the centre of the floral foam block. Add green moss on top of the floral block in the planter.

3 Push a 37.5 cm (15 inch) wooden dowel into the middle of the styrofoam ball already on the planter. Press another styrofoam ball on top of that wooden dowel about 10 cm (4 inches) into the ball. Push the other 37.5 cm (15 inch) wooden dowel into the middle of the second styrofoam ball and then press the third ball on the top of the dowel. You should now have three balls attached to your dowel stand.

4 Cut the stems of whatever flowers you are using about 5 cm (2 inches) below the blossoms. For fresh or dried flowers, attach a 12.5 cm (5 inch) piece of floral wire to the stem with floral tape as they are not as firm as silk flower stems. Afix dried flowers to the styrofoam ball with a glue gun using low heat.

5 Push the stems of your flowers into the styrofoam balls. Continue adding flowers until the styrofoam balls are as full as you desire. The bottom flowers on the lowest styrofoam ball may rest on the floral foam block in the planter. Decorate the planter further by gluing a ribbon of a complementary colour all around it with your glue gun and then make a bow at the front of the planter.
