How to Make a Hookah From a Water Bottle

A hookah is a form of water pipe that uses water and hoses to cool and filter the smoke that passes through it. Flavoured tobaccos known as "shisha" are the most popular form of tobacco to smoke through a hookah but normal tobacco can be used as well. Hookahs are usually made of glass and designed to be used by multiple people; however, you can make your own hookah out of a water bottle and few supplies in a few simple steps.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Water bottleGarden hoseMetal shaker topAluminium foilScissorsVinyl tubingRubber cementHookah mouthpieceTobacco or "shisha"Hookah coal

Instructions

1 Prepare the hookah bowl and drop step. Cut a section of garden hose that is two inches shorter than the height of your water bottle. This will serve as your hookah's drop step. The metal shaker top (from any herb shaker you can find in your pantry) will serve as the hookah bowl. Line the inside of the metal shaker top with aluminium foil.

2 Tape the shaker top upside-down to one end of the garden hose section so that it forms a bowl. Wrap the tape around the joint between the hose and the bowl completely to create a seal that is as close to airtight as possible. Punch a few holes in the aluminium foil in the centre of the bowl.

3 Add about three inches of water to the bottle. Insert the hose into the top of the water bottle and feed the hose in until about one inch of the hose is submerged in the water and about one inch of the hose is left outside of the bottle. Tape the top of the water bottle to the hose. Again, tape all the way around the top of the water bottle to create a seal that is as close to airtight as possible. You will have to break and redo this seal every time you change the hookah's water.

4 Cut a small "x" in the side of the water bottle above the water line. The "x" should be no larger than the diameter of the vinyl hose that will be used for the hookah hose. Cut the vinyl hose to your desired length and insert the hose into the "x." Apply a small amount of rubber cement around the area where you inserted the hose into the bottle to create an airtight seal. Insert a hookah mouthpiece into the end of the vinyl hose.

5 Pack the bowl with the tobacco of your choice. Cover the top of the bowl with aluminium foil, place the coals on top of the foil, and enjoy.
