How to Make a Moss Topiary

A moss topiary adds a classic, elegant look to your home decor. Whether the topiary is cone-shaped or has one to three moss covered balls, it gives the area a formal-looking touch of spring. Making a topiary at home does not require skilled artistry. The correct tools allow you to add moss to foam for a simplistic look or add flowers, ribbons, garlands or other types of embellishments to create a splash of colour.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Wooden dowel, approximately 24 inchesThree foam balls, 5, 6 and 8 inches in diameterCone-shaped foam, approximately 18 inches highBag of mossLow-temperature hot glue gun and glue sticks or spray adhesiveBowlFoam block or vase insert<Sharp knife (optional)Paraffin or an old candle (optional)Sturdy urn or other container, approximately 11 inches tallFaux strings of pearls, garlands, silk flowers, fake butterflies or other embellishmentsDried fruit, cinnamon sticks, miniature Christmas ornaments

Instructions

1 Push the wooden dowel through the centre of each of the three foam balls. This creates a hole to arrange the balls later. Alternatively, use a cone-shaped foam and the same methods to create a tree-shaped topiary.

2 Pull a cluster of moss from the bag.

3 Apply hot glue to the foam ball or cone and immediately place a cluster of moss on it. Another option is to use a spray adhesive. Both types dry quickly, therefore, it is important to work quickly. Repeat the process until all the foam is covered in moss. Do not cover the hole.

4 Set the moss covered balls onto a bowl to dry or another object that prevents them from rolling around. Stand the cone-shaped foam upright to allow it to dry.

5 Fill the container with a foam block or vase insert. Trim the edges a bit with a sharp knife to allow it to fit snugly. Rub a piece of paraffin or old candle along the edges of a serrated knife to enable you to cut the foam with less effort. Line up the edge of the foam insert flush with the top of the urn or other container. This allows the moss-covered foam to rest on top of it.

6 Place the dowel rod into the foam insert in the container to a depth of 6 inches. Remove it and spread white school or craft glue onto the entire rod. Set the dowel rod back into the foam insert.

7 Stack the foam balls onto the dowel rod, with the largest foam ball at the bottom, the medium-size one in the middle and the smallest on top. If using a cone shape, slide it onto the dowel with the narrow section pointing up.

8 Glue a small piece of moss on the top of the foam to cover the hole.

Tips and warnings

Bags of moss are available at garden centres, florists or craft and hobby stores.

Add faux strings of pearls, garlands, silk flowers, fake butterflies or other embellishments to the topiary with the hot glue gun or floral picks to create a more colourful display.

Adding dried fruit, cinnamon sticks or miniature Christmas ornaments to a cone-shaped topiary is a charming way to create holiday decor.

Use the hot glue or floral picks to attach the objects.
