Crafts are a great way to get children excited about being active and artistic. Crafting masks is a timeless project that will keep you and the kids busy while encouraging creative independence. They require little adult supervision and materials which is the makings of a fun craft.

Instructions

Making a Pirate Mask

1 Cut out the template or printout for the pirate mask. It is much easier to use a template to draw the mask parts rather than using artistic talent, especially for children who may not be able to draw that well. Mask templates can be found online and you can choose which one is best for your project. Some template are pages that can be coloured and cut out.

2 Place the template over your skin-toned craft foam and trace the head section of the mask. You will do the same with the other parts of the template such as the bandanna, eye patch, ear ring and mouth. Depending on the template or printout, you may need to add additional desired details. Trace each of the parts on the coloured foam of your choice.

3 Cut out the mask pieces. Most craft foam is thin enough to use child safe scissors to cut out these pieces. If you do not have child-safe scissors available, an adult will need to cut out the pieces of the mask. In this step, you can add additional details you may want to use to personalise the mask, such as hair or glasses.

4 Glue the pieces on to the head. In this step, you are putting together the face of your mask. Apply a generous amount of glue onto your pieces and place them on your foam head. Be sure not to cover the eye holes of your mask.

5 Allow the mask to dry for about an hour. This will help keep the pieces in place while you prepare for the next steps.

6 Use the hole punch to make holes on both sides of the mask. This is where the string for the mask will pass through .

7 Measure the yarn around the head of the person who will wear the mask to make sure it will stay put. Allow 1 inch allowance for the side ties so your mask will not be too tight.
