How to Make a Wedding Envelope

Whether you've made your own wedding invitations, want something custom-made that will coordinate with your printed invitations or are trying to stay within your wedding budget, making your own wedding invitation envelopes is the way to go. Making envelopes is simple even for beginners, and when your guests find a lovingly handcrafted envelope in their mailboxes, it will set the tone for your wedding from the very beginning.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

1 envelope of the size and shape suited for your invitation1 sheet thin decorative paperPencilScissorsThick black marking penRulerScoring tool1 sheet thick paperGluestick

Instructions

1 Open the flap on the envelope. Draw a heavy black mark along the fold line, using the ruler to keep the line straight. Place the open envelope on the thin decorative paper and trace around it. Cut along the tracing line to make the liner. Place the liner face up over the envelope and score it along the fold line, using the ruler to keep the score line straight. Cut 1 inch off the bottom edge and ½ inch off the remaining edges.

2 Peel apart the envelope, taking care not to damage the paper. Fold it out flat to make your template. Draw a heavy black mark on each fold on the template, using the ruler to keep the lines straight.

3 Place the template on the thick sheet of paper and trace around it. Cut along the tracing line to make the wedding envelope. Lay the wedding envelope on top of the template so that the black marks show through the paper. Score the wedding envelope along the fold lines, using the ruler to keep the score lines straight.

4 Fold the wedding envelope together along the score lines, using the template envelope as a pattern. Glue all overlapping edges except for the top flap.

5 Slide the liner inside the wedding envelope, centring it side-to-side and lining up the fold lines. Cover the backside of the liner flap with glue and press it to the wedding envelope flap.

Tips and warnings

For lots of envelopes, make a stronger template by unfolding the original envelope and tracing it onto heavy cardstock. Make a cardstock template for the liner, as well. Mark the score lines directly onto the cardstock. The paper for the envelope should be thicker than regular typing paper but not quite as thick as cardstock.

Use thin paper for the liner, such as scrapbooking paper or foil tissue paper.

If you don't have a scoring tool, you can use the dull side of a knife blade to mark the fold lines.

If the pattern envelope doesn't come apart easily, try holding the seams over the steam from a boiling tea kettle to loosen the glue.

If the envelope paper you have chosen is too thick to show the score marks from the template, score it freehand using the template as a guide. Use the ruler to keep the score lines straight.
