How to Make a Wooden Archery Bow

A wooden archery bow can be made at home for both children and adults. A homemade wooden bow can give hours of entertainment, as you can practice your target shooting and have competition amongst friends and family. Using a wooden dowel as the base for an archery bow, you can create bows that looks professionally made but at fractions of the cost. The tools and supplies needed for a wooden bow can be found at most hardware stores.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

1/2-inch thick wooden dowelSmall sawTwine or linen for the stringScissorsDuct tapeCarving knife

Instructions

1 Cut the wooden dowel down to size for the bow. Make the bow's length 4 feet for children and 6 feet for adults. Make it longer if the shooter prefers it longer.

2 Cut a small crease or groove in each end of the wooden dowel. Cut the grooves perpendicular to the length of the dowel, essentially horizontal to the ground when the dowel is standing straight up. Make each groove 1/4-inch deep. The creases should be facing the same direction in each end.

3 Cut the twine or linen for the bowstring. Almost any fibre can be used for the bowstring. The string should be twice the length of the wooden dowel bow, so there is enough twine to wrap the string around to secure it in each end of the dowel.

4 Make a knot in one end of the string. Slide this end through one of the creases until it stops due to the knot. Pull it tightly and wrap the string around the end a few times to secure it. Make a loop and pull the end through it, so the string is locked.

5 Connect the string through the second crease at the opposite end of the wooden dowel bow. Bend the dowel slowly to create a half-moon shape, but ensure the dowel does not break. There should be tension in the dowel, but not to the point where it is close to cracking or breaking. Bend it slowly to test how much bending is required. Attach the string. Ensure the twine is tight and tense when bending the dowel.

6 Slide the twine through the crease and wrap the string around the end of the bowel several times. Tighten the twine, holding the bent dowel in place to create tension in the bow. Make a loop with the twine and pull the end through the loop to secure. When adjustments need to be made, such as tightening the loop, do it at the crease with no knot.

7 Wrap some duct tape around the ends to support the string at the bow's ends. Cut the excess string off with scissors.
