How to make an effective investigatory project

An investigatory project or an experiment is a process that results in new knowledge. Researchers use experiments to test hypotheses or collect data. The process is very interesting and can be eye-opening because of unexpected results. During an experiment, researchers manipulate external conditions and neutralise factors that are irrelevant for the study. An investigatory project must be properly planned for it to arrive at reliable conclusions.

Problem

Proper planning involves defining the problem and writing down the questions you aim to answer. Questions have to be concise, clear and as specific as possible. Generalisations will be made later when initial questions are answered. At this stage, you have to dissect a broad problem into a number of smaller questions.

Hypothesis

Posit a hypothesis, defining the problem as a question or an assertive statement that must be either proved or rejected as a result of the investigation. Researchers usually target a “yes” answer; however, it is not necessary to prove anything for a research project to be considered successful.

Population

Choose the study population consisting of the items to be used as the source of information for the project. This can be people, animals, plants, and objects or their interactions. The population needs to be clearly defined.

Sampling

Sample the study population. If the size of the population is so large so as to make experimentation impracticable, researchers will elect to sample it. Samples are smaller groups of items that represent all characteristics of the whole population. The size of the sample and sampling method often depends on the scope and objectives of the study.

Data collection

An important part of the project is data collection. There are two main methods of data collection: data may be through observation, when no influence on the items of research is exercised, or by deliberately imposing some treatment on them to record the reactions. In either case, it is important to record everything as it happens to prevent data distortion in the next stage of the project.

Data analysis

Researchers use statistical methods and qualitative analyses to turn the raw data into useful and actionable information. The hypothesis is formally answered and preliminary results are known.

Conclusions

Document conclusions and recommendations for further research. At the end of the project, researchers formulate conclusions explaining the project results. Because one answered question sometimes results in a new one being posed, researchers can make broad recommendations for further investigations that can broaden and deepen knowledge in that area of research.
