How to Make Cheer Ponytail Holders

Cheerleading outfits aren't quite complete without a spirited hair bow to top off the uniform. While the rest of the outfit may be provided, hair accessories are often left up to the girls. A ponytail holder featuring the school colours is a popular choice for cheerleading events. The perfect hair tie may be difficult to find in stores, but making a cheer ponytail holder yourself is a quick project that requires only a few simple supplies. Make one for every girl on the team to coordinate your squad.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

RibbonScissorsNeedleThreadHair tieHot glue gunHot glue

Instructions

1 Select two or three ribbons of varying widths in the school colours. Cut each ribbon to a length of about 14 inches.

2 Layer the ribbons on top of one another so the thickest ribbon is on the bottom and the thinnest ribbon is on the top.

3 Fold the ribbons in half and pass a threaded needle through the centre of the ribbons. Wrap the thread around the ribbon several times to secure them together in the middle. Knot the thread and trim off excess.

4 Wrap one side of the ribbon over in a loop to make half of a bow. Repeat with the other side so you have two loops and two tails.

5 Pass the threaded needle through the centre of this bow, securing all layers together. Wrap the thread around the centre of the bow two to three times. Knot the thread and trim off any excess.

6 Place a dot of hot glue onto a hair tie. Affix the bow to the hair tie in the centre of the bow.

7 Cut a length of the thinnest ribbon to about 6 inches. Place one end of the ribbon over the hot glue where the hair tie and bow meet. Wrap the ribbon around the centre of the hair bow twice, concealing the area where the bow is sewn together. Trim off excess ribbon and glue the end of the ribbon to the back of the bow where it meets the hair tie with a dot of hot glue.

Tips and warnings

Use patterned ribbons featuring stripes or polka dots for a bold effect. If the school mascot is a tiger or other animal, consider adding an animal-print ribbon to the mix.
