If you love cupcakes but are watching your waistline, why not burn a cupcake candle instead? You can buy the supplies for making a cupcake candle at your local craft store. Silicon cupcake moulds make the process of candle making simple and enjoyable. Add whipped frosting and a sweet scent to make the finished products look good enough to eat.

Skill level:Moderate

Things you need

Candle wax (two or more colours of your choice)SaucepanChopstickSilicon cupcake mouldWickWire whiskSpatulaCandle colourant or scent (optional)

Instructions

1 Chop 1 cup of candle wax into small chunks.

2 Place the chunks into a saucepan and melt the wax on low heat. Use a chopstick to stir the melting wax. Wax is ready to pour when it is liquefied but not boiling. If you choose to add drops of candle colourant or scent, add them here in the liquid stage.

3 Pour the liquid wax into the silicon cupcake mould to make the first colour layer. Insert the wick into the centre of the cupcake mould.

4 Allow the first layer to cool completely.

5 Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 with a different-coloured wax. If you are adding two or more coloured layers, repeat the process of melting and pouring with new colours until the wax has reached the top of the cupcake mould. Allow the candle wax to cool completely.

6 Make the cupcake frosting by heating 1 cup of candle wax until it is liquefied. Use a wire whisk to give the wax a creamier texture. Let the wax cool slightly until it is similar to the texture of frosting. If the wax hardens too soon, repeat the process of heating and melting.

7 Use a spatula to spread the frosting just like you would frost an edible cupcake.

Tips and warnings

Exercise caution when heating candle wax, and do not let children complete this task unsupervised.

Never leave burning candles unattended.
