How to Make Good Pleats in Pants

Wearing pleated trousers is a great idea if you want to add a more formal look to your wardrobe. Pleated trousers may also help you look somewhat thinner because they visually divide the width of your trousers. You can easily make good pleats in your pant legs by using an iron, but ensure that you use the proper motion when applying the heat because you don't want to stretch the pant legs.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Ironing boardIron

Instructions

1 Plug your iron in and turn it on. Adjust it to the setting that is appropriate for the fabric of your trousers. Your iron may have fabric settings written on it. If you're not sure what temperature to set the iron, consult the owner's manual.

2 Fold both pant legs in half lengthwise, matching the inseam and outseam. Take the time to fold them exactly in half as you want the pleat to appear in the middle of the pant leg.

3 Lay the pant legs lengthwise on the ironing board, one on top of the other.

4 Flip the pant leg that is on top out of the way and apply the heated iron to the crease on the lower pant leg. Begin at the bottom of the pant leg and move toward the crotch. Use a lifting motion when pressing the iron; sliding the iron may stretch the pant leg.

5 Allow the pant leg to cool for a couple of minutes before you begin ironing the pleat into the second pant leg.

6 Flip over the trousers so that the newly pleated leg is on top of the nonpleated leg. Flip the newly pleated leg out of the way and ensure that the bottom leg is still creased in half in the appropriate area. Apply the iron in the same way you did in Step 4.

7 Allow this pant leg to cool before you remove it from the ironing board. Hang the trousers from the waist when you're finished.
