The gooney bird is a nickname for the albatross, but because of its funny name, it has been applied to a number of different goofy-looking bird puppets and stuffed animals. A gooney bird is an entertaining puppet that kids will have fun playing with. Making a gooney bird marionette is a surprisingly simple craft that kids can use to learn how to manipulate puppets.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

2 Popsicle sticksFishing line1 paper plateWhite glueSellotapeAssorted magic markersYellow yarnGoogly eyes3 styrofoam cups

Instructions

1 Colour the styrofoam cups and the paper plate yellow. Select one paper cup to be the head of the bird. Colour the inside of this cup orange.

2 Wrap yarn around your hand four times. Cut the end of the yarn. Pull the yarn loops off of your hand, and tie a knot in the centre of them. Cut the ends of the yarn to form a pom-pom. Make a tiny hole in the bottom of the cup near the side, and push the knot of the pom-pom through the hole. Then glue googly eyes on either side of the cup.

3 Take a long piece of string, and tie a knot in one end. Form another hole in the bottom of the cup on the opposite side as your first hole. Push the knot of this string through the hole to form the neck of your bird.

4 Tape the other end of the neck string to the inside of one end of the folded paper plate. Make another yellow yarn pom-pom as in step 2, and tape it to the inside of the other end of the folded plate to form the bird's tale.

5 For the bird's feet, punch a hole in the centre of a second cup. Take a length of string and tie a knot in each end. Push one knotted end of string through a hole in the cup. Then tape the other end of string to the bottom of the plate's arc. Repeat this process for the remaining foot, and tape it to the paper plate on the other side.

6 To form the marionette control, glue two Popsicle sticks crosswise to one another. Wait for the glue to dry, and tie a length of fishing line to each ray of the crossed Popsicle sticks.

7 Spread the bird body out on a table so that the head, tail and feet point different ways. Hold the Popsicle stick over the bird's body so that each ray lines up with a bird limb. Then attach the fishing line to the bird's head, legs and tail. Attach a final piece of fishing line between the centre of the Popsicle stick and the centre of the bird's body.
