How to Make Pewter Necklaces

Pewter charms, beads and jewellery findings are available in a variety of designs from dancing fairies to Japanese symbols. Select your favourite pewter charm and coordinating pewter beads to create a necklace design. Pair the pewter with black beads to add striking contrast to your jewellery. It's not difficult to make a pewter Y necklace, a pewter choker or an opera-length pewter strand; the most difficult part is making the pewter bead and charm selections.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Soft monofilament lineScissors27mm to 65mm pewter charm1/4-inch to 1/2-inch long black bugle beadsPewter beadsPaper clipPewter claspJeweller's glue

Instructions

1 To make a Y necklace, cut a length of soft monofilament line twice as long as the overall desired length of your necklace including the clasp, plus 4 inches. For example, for a 20-inch necklace, measure out 44 inches of line. These measurements are the same if you are making any style of pewter necklace with a clasp.

2 Thread the large pewter charm to the centre of the monofilament line. Hold the ends of the line together.

3 Thread a black bugle bead over both ends of the monofilament line to the top of the pewter charm. Bugle beads are long and slender. You can also use size 8 or 10 black seed beads to accent the necklace.

4 Thread a pewter bead over both lines to the bugle bead. Continue to alternate the black bugles and the pewter beads to make a 3-inch strand, ending with a pewter bead.

5 Separate the two monofilament lines. On one of the lines, attach a paper clip against the last pewter bead added. The paper clip will hold the beads in place while you add beads to the other strand.

6 Thread a bugle bead over the single strand of the line without the alligator clip. Thread a pewter bead behind the bugle bead. Continue to alternate the beads up to 2 inches from the end of the line.

7 Thread one half of a pewter necklace clasp behind the last bead. Tie a double overhand knot in the monofilament line between the last bead and the clasp. Feed the excess line back down through the pewter and bugle beads on the strand. It doesn't matter how long the excess line is; feed it down into your necklace. Cover the knot with jeweller's glue.

8 Remove the paper clip. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 with the remaining monofilament line to complete your Y necklace.
